Sylvain Guintoli - '14 Aprilia RSV4 Factory (SBK) by Samipie Sylvain Guintoli - '14 Aprilia RSV4 Factory (SBK) by Samipie
Coloured and graphite pencils on A3 sized 250 g/m^2 paper.

Sylvain “Guinters” Guintoli. A very known name that has been circulating in the motor racing scene for about fifteen years now. The in-Britain-living Frenchman started his career with the prototypes, first the Moto 250cc class, later even the MotoGP. Although he earned much respect from everyone by riding for the underdogs Yamaha Tech Trois and the Pramac Ducati, it wasn’t until his transfer to Superbikes when he made his success.

Guintoli’s biggest quality is the combination of his consistency and his calmness. No matter what, the ol’ veteran manages to drag every part of his bike over the finish line, no matter how battered up.
His calmness is a very rare sight in nowadays auto and motorsport. How often do we see driver/rider relations shatter on simply the desire to win? Think Hamilton vs. Rosberg, Vettel vs. Webber, Rossi vs. Biaggi or even Sykes vs. Baz. Not Guintoli though. Think back of the 2014 races at circuit de Magny-Course. Guintoli is in pursuit of the title, chasing points-leader Sykes. Marco Melandri, his teammate, went blatantly against team orders and didn’t let Guintoli pass, depriving him of a race victory on his home grounds! Did Sylvain get mad? No, he remained sportive. He congratulated Melandri and shook his hand, because in the end, he rode a better race.

It didn’t matter in the end, because, after a fantastic double-victory in Qatar, he was crowned as the 2014 World Superbike Champion. It took him 15 years, but that moment on the podium of Qatar, together with his wife Caroline Guintoli and his three children, made it all worth it.

On a second note, wasn't it himself who took victory over Rossi right on the last turn, in 2006 in Brno?

(Actually no - it was Toni Elias and at Estoril -just looked it up. It's almost 10 years so I hope my poor memory can be excused :) )

No worries. I get mixed-up too sometimes in these "retro" races from the past. 10 years ago is a long time. There are only few races I still remember. Valencia 2006 is one of them. The one were Troy Bayliss won with a one-off race on the Ducati that season and Rossi lost his championship to Harden. Good times, good times! :P

Heh, I remember that day too - I was doing a trackday at the local racetrack and -like Rossi- I crashed on a lowside entering the first turn of the track. Unlike Rossi however, I fractured 3 bones in my left and right wrists. Took 3 months and quite a bit of pain during physiotherapy to fully recuperate. These things one remembers :)

Ugh...yes. I know how you feel. About two years ago I high-sided my CBR600RR on the corner leading up to the back straight of Circuit Assen. Also on a track day. I broke my leg when my foot got stuck under the astroturf whilst sliding. The worst thing was that my CBR slid into the gravel trap. It started rolling and got lots of damage. :(
